Emerging Payments Glossary

An Interactive Reference for Emerging Payment Technologies and Terminology

As payment technologies continue to evolve, so does the language used to describe them. From mobile and contactless payments to agentic commerce and AI-driven transactions, emerging technologies are introducing new terminology and concepts across the payments ecosystem.

Developed by the U.S. Payments Forum’s Emerging Payments Working Committee, the Emerging Payments Glossary provides a practical, interactive reference designed to promote a shared understanding of established and emerging payment terminology.

Originally published in November 2019 as the Mobile Payments Standard Glossary, this resource has been expanded, updated, and renamed to reflect the evolving payments landscape. Version 2.0 incorporates updated definitions and additional terminology covering agentic commerce, AI agents, digital wallets, authentication, security, and other emerging payment concepts.
