EMV Migration Forum to Host Webinar on Communication Best Practices for U.S. Chip Migration

Princeton Junction, N.J., May 19, 2014 –As the U.S. continues its migration to EMV chip payments, communication plays an important everyday role, both internally for financial institutions and merchant organizations, and externally for consumers who will interact with new payment card technology. The EMV Migration Foruminvites executives to learn how to build effective, accurate and consistent communications surrounding EMV chip payments at a webinar coming this June.

“Effective Communication Practices for U.S. Chip Migration,” a webinar hosted by the EMV Migration Forum’s Communication and Education Working Committee, will take place on June 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. PT). To register, visit https://www4.gotomeeting.com/register/595715559. This webinar is ideal for financial institutions and retail executives responsible for internal and external communications, as well as any other stakeholders interested in communicating effectively on U.S. chip migration.

“Moving to chip payment technology requires broad education of the entire payments industry. Since consumers have multiple payment cards and wide range of merchant interactions, it is particularly important that consumers receive accurate and consistent messaging about their new chip cards and the new way to pay at the point-of-sale,” said Randy Vanderhoof, director of the EMV Migration Forum. “After attending this webinar, executives will be able to create sound communication strategies that will help the U.S. market understand and embrace chip payments and their many security benefits.”

The one-hour webinar will provide:

  • A high-level overview of EMV chip cards and the history and current status of the U.S. chip migration
  • An explanation of the role of accurate and consistent communications for the migration, including common questions and standard terminology related to the introduction of chip cards and chip-capable POS terminals
  • Communications best practices for financial institutions to internal staff and to cardholders
  • Communications best practices for retail organizations to internal staff and to customers
  • A takeaway framework for creation of clear and effective communications
  • The opportunity for attendees to ask questions at the conclusion of the webinar

Webinar speakers include: Randy Vanderhoof, director of the EMV Migration Forum; Brady Cullimore, director of the U.S. EMV Project Management Office at American Express; and Cynthia Knowles, Vice President of Market Integration & EMV Migration at FIS.

All registrants will receive a complimentary “Standardization of Terminology” document as a resource to aid communication initiatives. The document contains commonly used terms relating to chip card payment technology and their definitions, as well as commentary regarding less-preferred synonyms that may cause confusion and misunderstanding.

This webinar is part of the EMV Migration Forum’s ongoing effort to educate the U.S. market to ensure a successful migration to chip technology. Additional educational resources, including tutorials and information specifically for issuers, merchants, acquirers/processors and consumers, can be found at www.emv-connection.com.

The next members-only meeting of the EMV Migration Forum will be held May 20-21, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, San Diego. For more details, visit http://www.emv-connection.com/us-payments-forum/next-meeting/.

About U.S. EMV Migration

Commonly used globally in place of magnetic stripe, EMV chip technology helps to reduce card fraud in a face-to-face card-present environment; provides global interoperability; and enables safer transactions across contact and contactless channels. EMV implementation was initiated in the U.S. market in in 2011 and 2012 when American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa announced their roadmaps for supporting an EMV-based payments infrastructure. Acquirer processor readiness mandates to support EMV were established for 2013, with liability shifts for managing fraud risk in a face-to-face environment set for 2015.

About the EMV Migration Forum

The EMV Migration Forum is a cross-industry body focused on supporting the EMV implementation steps required for global and regional payment networks, issuers, processors, merchants, and consumers to help ensure a successful introduction of more secure EMV chip technology in the United States. The focus of the Forum is to address topics that require some level of industry cooperation and/or coordination to migrate successfully to EMV technology in the United States.
